A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Chula Vista: The Historic San Diego Country Club

By Betty Torano, REALTOR® · Eastlake resident since 1987 · November 17, 2025

Many people are surprised to learn that one of the oldest and most respected golf courses in San Diego County isn't in La Jolla or Coronado, but right here in Chula Vista.

Located in the heart of the city, the San Diego Country Club has been a local treasure for more than a century. It blends history, beauty and a strong sense of community, highlighting the charm residents love about Chula Vista. As a local Realtor and Eastlake resident, I enjoy sharing the stories that make this city special.

A Legacy That Dates Back to the 1920s

The San Diego Country Club was founded in 1897, but its Chula Vista chapter began in 1920, when the club purchased land south of downtown. Scottish architect William Watson designed the 18-hole, all-grass course, which opened in 1921. Today it remains one of the oldest and most established golf courses in the county.

It has hosted USGA qualifiers, amateur championships and countless community events. Golfers appreciate the traditional layout, peaceful atmosphere and sense of history woven into every fairway.

A Peaceful Escape in the Heart of the City

Surrounded by classic neighborhoods and mature landscaping, the country club provides a quiet, scenic retreat. Its wide fairways, shade trees and open green spaces make it a favorite among golfers and longtime residents.

The location is also convenient. Residents enjoy being minutes from downtown Chula Vista's Third Avenue district, known for coffee shops, dining and community events.

Close to Some of Chula Vista's Most Popular Neighborhoods

Several of Chula Vista's most desirable residential communities are a short drive from the club:

  • Eastlake: Known for its lake, parks and resort-style amenities, with an easy trip to the club from a peaceful master-planned community.
  • Otay Ranch: A modern, walkable community with shopping, trails and newer homes.
  • Rancho del Rey: Rolling hills, larger homes and established parks, just minutes from the course.
  • Rolling Hills Ranch: An upscale, scenic community with beautiful homes and quick access to parks and trails.

A Growing Area: The Chula Vista Bayfront

Just minutes from the country club, one of Southern California's most exciting developments is taking shape along the Chula Vista Bayfront, with waterfront parks, dining, walkways and the Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center, a major destination for tourism, events and entertainment.

That combination of historic charm and modern growth makes central Chula Vista especially appealing: you can live near a 100-year-old golf course while enjoying the new energy on the waterfront.

A Proud Part of Chula Vista's Story

For more than a century, the San Diego Country Club has been a symbol of Chula Vista's heritage. Generations have enjoyed the course, and its continued presence speaks to the stability and character of this part of the city.
